Location of Regional Headquarters of Multinational Corporations

When national figures were previously compiled in March 2002, New South Wales was the home to 553 Asia Pacific regional headquarters (RHQs) and regional services centres, or 65% of the Australian total. By June 2005, New South Wales' total number of RHQs had risen to about 620.

About one third of the RHQs in New South Wales are involved in the information and communications technology industry. There is also strong representation in manufacturing, finance and insurance, and research and development.

Multinational companies find New South Wales an ideal location for their Asia Pacific RHQs. They are particularly drawn by the State's talented and well educated workforce and the vast range of language skills available in the State (see section C). Highly competitive telecommunications, office property and other business costs, as well as extensive air links throughout Asia from Sydney Airport have also contributed to New South Wales' success in attracting RHQs. A further important factor is the much sought after lifestyle that Sydney offers, helping to attract staff from head office and other locations to work in RHQs located here.
