Information Technology Businesses

In 2006-07, New South Wales was home to approximately 12,561 businesses in information and communications technology, representing 41% of the Australian total. New South Wales continues to be the largest employer of ICT specialists. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics an average of 113,700 people were employed in ICT occupations in New South Wales in 2007-08, representing approximately 38% of the national total. This includes approximately 73,000 ICT professionals, 14,200 ICT managers, and 17,700 ICT support technicians. In 2007-08, Victoria had an average of 85,500 people employed in ICT, and Queensland 43,200.

New South Wales is also the base for Australia's ICT services exports. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in 2007, New South Wales exports of ICT services were worth nearly $1 billion, representing 45% of the national total.

Most of Australia's business R&D in ICT occurs in New South Wales. In 2005-06, New South Wales accounted for 45% of the $974 million businesses spent on computer and communication services R&D in Australia. It also contributed to 30% of the $411 million allocated nationally by businesses to electronic equipment R&D.

New South Wales is a preferred location for ICT specialist businesses with many major ICT multinationals.  Hewlett Packard, IBM, Microsoft, Nokia, Oracle, Panasonic, and Sun Microsystems have chosen Sydney as the base for their Australian or regional operations.
