Office for Science and Medical Research


The Office for Science and Medical Research works to promote growth and innovation in science and medical research to achieve better economic, technological, health and environmental outcomes for the people of NSW.

Through research funding, business assistance and advice on policy and legislation, it helps develop a business environment conducive to research and development, builds the capacity of scientific and medical research institutions to undertake world-class research, and fosters new business and commercial opportunities.

The Office for Science and Medical Research administers funding and award programs worth nearly A$200 million, including:
  • BioFirst – the NSW Government’s biotechnology strategy
  • Science Leveraging Fund
  • Medical Research Support Program
  • Spinal Cord Injury and Conditions Research Grants Program
  • science awards and prizes.
