Through DSRD support for the National Information and Communications Technology Australia (NICTA), Australian Research Council Centres of Excellence, and other National Research Facilities, NSW is a leading centre for research capabilities.
DSRD supports the research and development of new ideas and technology products and services by:
- supporting leading research and development organisations
- providing business and industry links for NSW research centres and NSW innovators to help them explore opportunities for investment or partnering to commercialise research outcomes
- helping NSW business access national and international funding opportunities.
Biotechnology
NSW is home to about 40% of Australia's biotechnology and medical device companies and has the highest level of Australian R&D investment in biotechnology, about A$1 billion each year. The State accounts for 46% of Australian business investment in medical and health sciences.

Information and communications technology (ICT)
Most of Australia's ICT business R&D takes place in NSW. In 2004-05, the State accounted for 46% of the A$872 million businesses spent on computer and communication services R&D in Australia. It also contributed 52% of the A$250 million allocated nationally by businesses to electronic equipment R&D.
