Digital media

The rise of digital media in NSW, and in particular Sydney, is powered by the innovation-driven professionals of the creative industries and ICT sectors.

Sydney’s world class lifestyle and innovative business culture are driving the growth of our digital marketplace.

Innovation mix

It’s been formed by the combination of leading technology, future-focussed education and considerable financial influence - all supported by a tolerant and diverse culture.

Today NSW benefits from a highly inventive and articulate community of filmmakers, artists, designers, writers, software developers and transmedia entrepreneurs, along with many successful advertising and creative agencies.

Creative melting pot

In NSW, thriving independent developers rub shoulders with large companies, studios and multinational agencies, creating work that competes with the best in the world. The industry brings our ICT and creative capabilities together, enabling collaboration between fine arts and music, animation, transmedia and design.

World class animation

Award winning NSW visual effects and animation continue to dazzle audiences around the globe. Recent worldwide blockbusters at least in part created here include Charlotte’s Web, 300, Harry Potter & The Order of the Phoenix, Death Defying Acts, The Painted Veil, Lord of the Rings, The Matrix trilogy, and House of Flying Daggers. These productions are multi-million dollar franchises, and a testament to our State’s creative drive, unbridled ambition and technologically gifted workforce.

Education strengths

In 2009, we had over 14,000 students studying information technology courses at the 11 universities in NSW. And a further 14,400 students were studying in information technology fields at NSW TAFE Colleges and through other vocational education and training providers.

Our leading creative education institutions include The University of Sydney, The University of Technology Sydney, the University of New South Wales' College of Fine Arts, Enmore Design Centre, and the Australian Film Television and Radio School.

Lion's share of advertising

When it comes to advertising, the 2009 Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival confirmed Sydney as the advertising world’s fifth most creative city, with the bulk of Australia’s 45 Cannes Lions being awarded to our capital based businesses.
