Clean energy

NSW is the smart choice for companies looking to position themselves in the low carbon economy of tomorrow.

We are home to a wide range of cleantech businesses that are not only leading the country, but also the world, in helping reduce energy consumption.

Targeting a better future

The NSW Government has set ambitious targets to adapt the State to a low carbon future. By 2020, renewable energy projects are expected to create over 6,000 jobs in our State.

NSW has set targets for 20 per cent of the State's energy consumption to come from renewable sources by 2020, and for all greenhouse gas emissions to be reduced by 60 per cent by 2050 against 2000 levels.

To reach these goals, an estimated $8 billion is spent on environmental goods and services each year.

Giving water the works

NSW has set a target for 12 per cent of Sydney’s water to be recycled by 2015 - that’s 70 billion litres of water every year – and for 4,000 GWh of annual electricity savings by 2014 thanks to our energy programs.

Less waste, more opportunity

Our State also has in place a Waste and Environment Levy to reduce waste disposal and an increased recycling target from 26 to 66 per cent by 2014.

Green credentials

NSW established the world’s first mandatory greenhouse emissions trading scheme in 2003. Together with our leading strengths in financial services, we are well positioned to capture emerging carbon market opportunities in the Asia Pacific.

We’ve undertaken State-wide planning reforms to increase certainty and speed of approvals for renewable energy precincts.

NSW has committed up to $120 million to projects funded under the Australian Government’s Solar Flagship Program for utility-size solar power projects.
