Policy and program support projects

National Innovation System

The Innovation and Productivity Council and its Secretariat was an active participant in the Review of the National Innovation System undertaken by the Commonwealth Government in 2008. The Council's Secretariat prepared a submission to the Review Panel outlining:

  • principles for innovation policy development;
  • principles for improved implementation/delivery;
  • recommended national innovation priorities; and
  • a suggested role for public service innovation.

The submission also outlined NSW's areas of consistency with the national approach and emphasised specific areas where further investigation could strengthen the overall review of the system.

The National Innovation System Review was commissioned by the Commonwealth Government to support the formation of innovation policy by the Commonwealth Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research. The Council's Secretariat also convened a policy workshop among States and the Commonwealth to provide input regarding the Review Panel's Green Paper, venturousaustralia: Building Strength in Innovation.

Other program support projects

The Innovation and Productivity Council, through its Secretariat, has provided advice and input into a variety of Commonwealth and State innovation policy and program developments such as:

  • Commonwealth, State and Territory Advisory Council on Innovation (CSTACI). The Innovation Unit is the primary contact point with the Commonwealth on innovation-related matters, including providing advice and coordinating input into relevant Commonwealth-led activities and program proposals.
  • The establishment of the Innovation Pathways Program, which is now being managed by the Investment and Export Services branch of NSW Trade & Investment.
  • Providing broad support for the selection of NSW locations for the Commonwealth funded Enterprise Connect Centres; the Clean Energy Innovation Centre and the Creative Industries Innovation Centre. These Centres aim to help Australian businesses become more innovative and to assist in boosting productivity.
