Projects and Publications

The Innovation Unit is involved in a number of major projects aimed at advancing innovation in NSW.

CURRENT PROJECTS

Creative Industries sector
An analysis of the economic fundamentals of the NSW creative industries sector has commenced. NSW leads the nation in the creative industries with 39 per cent of the nation's creative workforce. A report will be prepared using an evidence base to assess the industry and its importance to the broader NSW economy. Click to see the Creative Industries Request for Proposal.

Financial Services sector
Currently underway are a number of studies into the financial services sector, including an analysis of activities required to enhance Sydney’s position as a regional financial services centre and the potential role of an Institute for Advanced Research in Finance.

Logistics sector
A key report into the NSW logistics sector, Path to Innovation: Innovation in the NSW Freight Logistics Industry, has been completed. Recommendations are currently being considered by government.

Manufacturing sector
The Innovation Unit is providing input into the operations of the federally funded Enterprise Connect Centre for Manufacturing which will be established in NSW in 2008. This centre will provide a range of business services and ongoing mentoring to help firms access new ideas, knowledge and technology.

Broadband Roll Out
The Innovation Unit is working with the Department of Commerce to prepare for the Federal Government's roll out of high speed, open access broadband to 98 per cent of Australians. A submission has been made to the National Expert Panel. The Innovation Unit is continuing its work with the Department of Commerce to produce a paper for the Federal Minister's office on the importance of the project to NSW and key areas in which NSW can assist with the roll out. In order to achieve this, a NSW Broadband Panel has been established consisting of relevant public and private sector members.  The unit is also preparing a submission on telecommunications for the National Infrastructure Audit.

Low Carbon Innovation Project
A Low Carbon Innovation Project is being developed in conjunction with the Department of Environment and Climate Change. The project will investigate the drivers and impediments to the possible take-up of low carbon technologies and processes, and identify government actions. Skills for Innovation
Various aspects of the skill development needs for innovation are being reviewed.

Regional Innovation Strategy
A regional innovation strategy for NSW is currently being scoped for development.

Clean Energy
The Innovation Unit is preparing a proposal in relation to the federally funded Enterprise Connect Centre for Clean Energy which will be established in 2008.

Review of the National Innovation System
NSW is an active participant in the current Review of the National Innovation System being undertaken by the Federal Government.  The Innovation Unit is preparing a submission to the Review Panel on behalf of the Department of State and Regional Development.
