Mining and heavy industries
Exploration and mining companies choose New South Wales (NSW) because of its large, diverse and rich mineral deposits, particularly coal.
NSW boasts large scale base-metal provinces, such as Broken Hill, as well as precious and poly-metallic provinces, such as Parkes, Cobar and New England.
Companies characterise NSW as a location with developed and easily accessible infrastructure, low average operating costs and a highly skilled pool of workers.

Case study - Gujarat NRE
In 2010 Gujarat NRE announced that it planned to invest $500 million to support its current and future coal mining operations in the Illawarra.
Gujarat NRE Coking Coal, formerly known as Gujarat NRE Minerals, owns and operates two hard coking coal mines in the Illawarra which now produce about 1.3 million tonnes a year. This is expected to increase to about 6 million tonnes a year by 2014-15.
Gujarat NRE employs approximately 450 people.
Chairman of Gujarat NRE Arun Kumar Jagatramka said that the investment would be used to support and develop both mines, including opening up new areas in one of the mines, to extend longwall mining and to construct underground access roads.
"With this investment over four years we expect to create about 150 jobs, including some apprenticeships.
"The demand for coking coal in India is expected to double over the next 10 years, so we see a bright future for our operations in NSW.
"Gujarat NRE appreciates the work of the NSW Government and Austrade to help us establish and grow in NSW."
