Transport and logistics

Transport and logistics companies choose New South Wales (NSW) because Sydney is the gateway to Australia. NSW offers leading infrastructure and operational efficiencies and is Australia’s largest state economy.

  • Sydney Airport accounts for over 40% of Australia's international aircraft movements and over 50% of airfreight to and from Australia
  • Newcastle is the world’s largest coal export port
  • Port Botany is a Australia's largest gateway for Australian imports
  • Port Kembla, south of Sydney, is growing in importance as a coal and bulk wheat exporter. It is also Australia’s premier import destination for passenger vehicles.

Examples of transport and logistics companies we have assisted

The Department has worked with many domestic and international companies such as Delta Airlines, Virgin Blue, Freightliner and Sutherlands Transport, just to name a few.

Case study - Freightliner

The NSW Government, through NSW Trade & Investment, has been actively involved in helping Freightliner Australia implement its NSW business plans and widen its operations soon after entering the Australian marketplace.

A subsidiary of the UK rail freight leader Freightliner UK, Freightliner Australia began its first Australian rail operation in 2009 through a contract with the Namoi Cotton Co-operative in north-west NSW. The contract was to transport regular shipments of cotton to Port Botany for export - a regular rail service to replace intermittent and irregular shipments (as well as the occasional use of the Ports of Brisbane and Melbourne by Namoi Cotton).

Single point of contact

NSW Trade & Investment is the NSW Government’s business development agency. The Department can introduce investors to appropriate contacts in other Government agencies.

  • NSW Maritime. This regulatory authority ensures the safe and responsible use of NSW waters
  • NSW Department of Planning. This agency is responsible for land use assessments and approvals
  • the Roads and Traffic Authority. This agency is responsible for the licensing road vehicles and is a major owner of road assets
  • Railcorp. This agency owns and maintains the metropolitan rail network and provides access to freight operators in the metropolitan area
  • NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water. This Department oversees environmental and contamination issues on development sites.
