World's largest telco chooses Sydney

23/06/2011

NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Trade and Investment  Andrew Stoner has welcomed China Telecom's choice of Sydney for its Australian subsidiary.

"China Telecommunications Corporation, a State-owned  corporation with its headquarters in Beijing,  has chosen Australia's  global city to establish its presence here and for its expansion into Oceania," Mr Stoner said.

China Telecom Corporation Limited is the world's largest  landline telecommunications and broadband services provider and the world's  largest CDMA mobile operator.

In March 2011, the company had about 173 million landline  access lines, more than 66 million landline broadband subscribers and more than  100 million mobile subscribers. It is China's largest fixed line services  provider and the third largest mobile telecommunications provider.

China Telecom (Hong Kong)'s Chairman and Chief Executive Mr  Deng Xiaofeng said Sydney  was a good fit for the company.

"Sydney's  highly skilled ICT workforce is one of the reasons we chose the city. We also  appreciate the strong financial services sector here and the commitment to  innovation and education," Mr Deng said.

"We expect to create 10 jobs in our Sydney office which will service our  corporate Chinese clients in NSW by providing a range of data and internet  services."
