Sydney hosts leading medical technology conference

Sydney hosted Australia’s leaders in medical technology on June 15 and 16 for the AusMedtech 2009 Medical Technology Conference.

The NSW Government was host State sponsor for the event which highlighted NSW's leading strengths in medical device development.

AusMedtech 2009 attracted over 200 people from the medical technology community, including 115 from interstate and up to 20 from overseas, and focused on the future growth and sustainability of the medical devices and diagnostics sector.

AusMedtech brought together key medical technology stakeholders including company representatives, innovators, clinicians, researchers, service providers, suppliers, investors, and Government representatives.

The conference focused on key business development issues including distribution and sales networks, regulatory approvals, reimbursement, finance and investment, quality assurance systems and implementation.

NSW is home to 45 per cent of Australia’s medical device companies including global success stories like Cochlear and ResMed.

The State has strengths across the broad spectrum of medical device innovation including laboratory equipment, diagnostic devices, hospital supplies, surgical equipment, biomedical devices and implants, monitoring equipment, imaging equipment, drug delivery systems, health-related software and dental equipment.

In 2007-08, NSW accounted for $1.142 billion, or almost three-quarters (74 per cent), of Australia's total medical equipment exports.
