Aboriginal business a top tourism award winner - again

09 Mar 2008

For the second year in a row, the Muru Mittigar Aboriginal Cultural and Education Centre in western Sydney has picked up the prestigious Qantas Australian Tourism Award for Indigenous Tourism.

Muru Mittigar, at Cranebrook at the base of the Blue Mountains, has provided a meeting place for sharing the Aboriginal culture with Australian and overseas tourists for the past ten years.

Muru Mittigar offers guided tours of their cutlural centre, traditional dance performances, nature walks, boomerang throwing and didgeridoo playing. Muru Mittigar also has a retail outlet selling authentic Aboriginal crafted products and gift items, a cafe and plant nursery.

The NSW Department of State and Regional Development has worked with the company over a number of years assisting them in accessing new tourist markets through local and international trade shows.

The Muru Mittigar received the Qantas award at a ceremony in Canberra on 29 February.

Muru Mittigar, which means 'pathway to friends' in the Darug language, was established in 1998 by the Aboriginal community of Western Sydney.
