New England-North West Food and Wine Showcase

13 May 2008

World class food and wine products from the New England - North West were showcased at NSW Parliament from 12-16 May to raise Sydney's awareness about the culinary and tourism delights on offer in the regions.

The NSW Government hosted its fifth in an ongoing series of regional food and wine showcases to help generate regional produce sales into Sydney and promote regional tourism.

Regional products featured on the Monday included fine wines, pasta and semolina and durum flour products, trout, pork, beef,  lamb, goat meats,  olives and olive oils, spices, gourmet coffee, soy products, bush honey products, milk and dairy products, jams, spreads, relishes, vinegars, chutneys, pickles and preserves.

Then, from Tuesday to Friday, produce from the New England-North West was incorporated into the Parliament House menu to showcase its potential to create outstanding modern cuisine.

Minister for Regional Development Tony Kelly said the NSW Government has previously conducted food and wine showcases of the Orange, Hawkesbury, Southern Highlands and Northern Rivers regions.

"These ongoing showcases aim to raise awareness among Sydney produce buyers about the quality, diversity and innovation that is occurring in our regional food and beverage sectors,” Mr Kelly said.

The aim is to help generate more food and beverage sales and supply contracts for regional producers, as well as promote regional tourism around the food and wine industries.

In terms of produce sales, the showcases particularly targeted Sydney providores, restaurateurs, sommeliers, hotel food and beverage managers, caterers, speciality food and wine retailers and export consolidators as well as media representatives and other key influencers in the food and beverage sectors.

Minister for State Development Ian Macdonald said the NSW food processing industry generates turnover of more than $23 billion each year, employs 58,000 people and generates exports worth more than $3 billion.

"The processed food and beverage sector is NSW's largest manufacturing industry and accounts for more than 20 per cent of the State’s manufacturing output,” he said.

"The food and wine industries are key contributors to our regional economies and play an increasingly important role in regional tourism."

The New England - North West regional food and wine showcase was organised and delivered by the Department of State and Regional Development, the Northern Inland Regional Development Board, the Department of Primary Industries, Tourism NSW, and Parliament House Food and Beverage Services staff.
