Industry Strengths


  • The NSW finance, insurance, property and business services markets had a total industry income of A$72.9 billion in 2005-6
  • The NSW information and communications technology (ICT) industry generates A$31 billion turnover a year and employs more than 100,000 people
  • Manufacturing contributed A$31.5 billion to the NSW economy in 2005-6
  • NSW exported more than A$11 billion worth of mining and mineral products in 2005-6
  • NSW wine production has trebled in the past decade with the value of wine exports increasing nearly sevenfold - A$557 million in 2004-5.


NSW is one of the world's leading service economies with strengths in finance and business services, and information and communications technology.

The State is also significantly represented in manufacturing, agribusiness, film and multimedia and defence.

Newer industries as diverse as biotechnology, aquaculture and contact centres are also flourishing.
